The first step in your tiny house hunt is figuring out what is important to you, how to get there and how much it will cost. These handmade guides will help get the ball rolling on the imagination and design parts of the tiny home project. As always, we are here to help so don't hesitate to ask your questions!
Before you commit to going tiny, make sure you have checked on your local building codes for ADU (Alternative Dwelling Units) requirements for your city, state and county. Key things to look for are required setbacks, maximum number of ADUs on your site, required building permits, the difference between the way your jurisdiction treats Tiny Houses on a foundation vs. Tiny Houses on Wheels (THOW). If your Tiny Home is going to be the primary dwelling on the property, there are often other requirements and certifications that are needed, including electrical service and plumbing fixture counts. OMARC DESIGN specializes in reuse tiny home design at an affordable price. We also do contract work for unique outdoor projects, treehouses and landscape architecture.
Reuse refers to any material or item that was not purchased new from the original vendor. This includes contractor excess bought at a discount price, second hand accessories that have been gently used, items purchased from second hand non profit retailers such as Habitat for Humanity, and any item that has been donated or found and repurposed to build our homes.
The short answer is that it depends on the house. We aim for 30-50% recycled materials in our prebuilt homes and will likely exceed that in our custom homes, as many clients prefer to integrate their personal possessions into the build.
This is a common concern for new Tiny House owners! Tiny House regulations vary greatly and depend on which city, county and state you are located in. Visit our "Tiny Resources" list to find your local rules and regulations, or contact us if your area is not listed!
